How to Make 3 Easy Tasty Festive Alcoholic Drinks for the Holidays Christmas Xmas Rum Eggnog and Gin
Serious Eats / Victor Protasio
If you're planning on throwing a party this season you really need a drink that will not only bring the party cheer but is also relatively easy (and affordable) to make and has a built-in show.
I've been mixing up variations of a Flaming Holiday Punch (known in some circles as an "English Bishop") each December for years. The basic recipe comes from Esquire's 1949 Handbook for Hosts which is delicious in its own right but leaves room for improvisation. The ingredients are a snap: a bottle of aged rum (something with a bit of body and character — Appleton Extra works here as does Matusalem Gran Reserva Mount Gay Eclipse of Cockspur — warmed in a hot-water bath to avoid the unpleasantness that can arise from hot flammables on a stovetop) poured into a heatproof Dutch oven or heatproof punch bowl over roasted oranges studded with cloves. Add a little sugar and some festive spices turn out the lights before striking the match (be careful!) and the conversation will almost certainly come to a halt.
